John chapter 4, if you have your copy of God's Word, you can follow along as we read this morning. And I'll also be having a little PowerPoint to go along with it with my sermon this morning. We're continuing on in our study of the existence and the attributes of God. And this morning take our text from John chapter 4 lengthy reading. We'll begin at verse 1 and we'll go down to verse 45.

So it's a long reading. I want to get the full context of this in order to get the full understanding of what's going on here. So, begin verse 1. Therefore, when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John, although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were. He left Judea and went away again into Galilee, and he had to pass through Samaria.

So he came to a city of Samaria called Sychar near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there so Jesus being wearied from his journey was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, give me a drink, for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

Therefore the Samaritan woman said to him, How do you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me being a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is who says to you, give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. She said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do you get that living water?

Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle? Jesus answered and said to her, everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst ever, but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water so I will not be thirsty nor come back here to draw. He said to her, Go, call your husband and come back here.

The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, you have correctly said, I have no husband, for you have had five husbands. The one you now have is not your husband. This you have said truly." The woman said to him, Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

Jesus said to her, woman believe me an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For such people, the Father seeks to be his worshipers.

God is Spirit. Those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming. He who is called Christ, when he comes he will declare all things to us. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he." And at this point, his disciples came and they were marveling that he was speaking with a woman.

And no one said, what do you seek or why are you speaking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, went into the city and said to the men, come see a man who told me all things that I have done. Is this not the Christ? They went out of the city and were coming to Him. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But He said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about.

So disciples were saying to one another, has anyone brought him anything? Jesus said to them, my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say there are yet four months and then comes the harvest behold I say to you lift up your eyes and look on the fields they're white for harvest even now he who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for life eternal so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together for in this case the same is true one who one sows and another reaps I see you to reap that for which you have not labored and others have labored you have entered into their labor From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman who bore witness. He told me all the things that I've done. So when the Samaritans came to Jesus they were asking him to stay with them.

And he stayed there two days. Many more believed because of his word. And they were saying to the woman, excuse me, and they were saying to the woman, it is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know this one is truly the Savior of the world. And after the two days, he went from there into Galilee, for Jesus himself bore witness that a prophet has no honor in his own country So when he came to Galilee the Galileans received him having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast for they themselves also went through the feast. This is the infallible, the inerrant, the all-sufficient Word, the living God.

Let us pray. Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word. We thank you for the passage before us Lord our prayer this morning is that you would help us To know you more Lord even as we approach this rich text, there's so much there. Lord, I pray that you'll just Guide me as your servant to preach the things that you would have me to preach. And Lord, give me unction from on high.

Be with those who are here and those who listen over the internet. That your Holy Spirit may do the work that only you can do, Lord, I pray that your people be strengthened, encouraged, even challenged, and that souls will be saved as a result of our time here today. I pray that you'll forgive us of our sins, For it's in Jesus name we pray, amen. The title of my message is God is Spirit, Let's worship Him in spirit and truth. God is spirit, let's worship Him in spirit and truth.

And so As we've read the passage, we see the background. Praise God, Jesus had to pass through Samaria. This Samaritan woman did not know it at the time, but she had an appointment that day with Jesus. She had a date with the Creator of the world, the Redeemer of man, the Savior himself. And Savior Himself.

And that was an appointment that she could not miss. She had to be at the well that day. If you're saved today, if you have been born again, if you have come to know Jesus as your Savior, there was a point in your life when you also had an appointment with Jesus. There was an appointment that you had in which the gospel message was presented when you heard of the death, the burial, and the resurrection of Christ and that you not only heard about Jesus, but you met Him. It was a date that you didn't know about before, but it was a date that you could not avoid.

The Gospel had to be preached. There was no way to avoid it. This woman, this Samaritan woman was surprised at the meeting, but I submit to you today that there are no surprise encounters with God. There are no surprise encounters with the sovereign God of the universe. There are no surprise dates on God's calendar.

There are no surprise visitors when it comes to situations like this. This woman, this Samaritan woman, she had an idea of worship, as all Samaritans did. But she was confused because The Samaritans had one idea and the Jews had another. The Jews, they met in Jerusalem, but the Samaritans, they met in the mountain. They met in the mountain.

It's kind of peculiar for us to read about this difference, but this was a centuries-old difference. In fact, I'm not going to give you all of the background behind the differences between the Jews and the Samaritans, but just know that the Jews thought of the Samaritans as being mongrels. There was a lot of differences between them. And in fact, in fact, we kind of pick up on some of that here. In fact, in verse 9, it says, Therefore The Samaritan woman said to him, how do you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, being a Samaritan woman, for Jews have no dealings with Samaritans?

So the Bible, John, the Gospel writer, He pins this in here. Right after He pinned in verse 4 that Jesus had to pass through Samaria. So we kind of pick it up that Jesus had to pass through Samaria, that he met up with this woman There at the well, and this woman was surprised because the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. It was racial, it was religious, There were so many different ways that these people were separated. But I want to focus in on the religious separation here.

You see, the Jews recognized all of the entirety of the Hebrew canon, so they met at Jerusalem for worship. If you go to 2 Chronicles and back into the Old Testament there, Mix. We'll just drop in right there at verse 6. It says, but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel. And so, It was in the heart of David.

Solomon says, My father, to build a house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel. And so in Jerusalem, you have this massive temple that had been built and all of those things. And it was a big thing for the Jews, that They worship in Israel and Jerusalem. But the Samaritans, they didn't recognize all of the Hebrew canon, So they worshiped in the mountain. That comes from tying in with our Genesis studies.

That goes back to Genesis. Remember when Abram built an altar to Yahweh in Genesis chapter 12. When he made that altar to the Lord. Genesis chapter 12 and verses 6 and 7. Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem to the oak of Mora.

Now the Canaanite was then in the land, then Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to your seed, I will give this land. So he built an altar there to Yahweh who had appeared to him. Abram built this altar there to the Lord Yahweh, a place that was overlooked by Mount Jerism. And so the Samaritans put a lot of importance in that. They didn't recognize all of the Hebrew scriptures.

Anyway, the Jews considered them Mongrels. They wouldn't have nothing to do with them. So where would they worship? Well, we'll just go on back to where Abram was. And so that's what the Samaritan woman is talking about when she says the Jews worship in Jerusalem, but her people worship in the mountain.

She probably never had a Jewish person to talk to about this, about this and her inquisitive mind wondered about this sort of thing. As we think about this and go back into our text there in John chapter 4. As I think about this, I'm sure that Jesus had a lot of encounters with other people. I'm glad that this encounter is in the scriptures because this Samaritan woman was not so different than us in our day. The modern American Baptist or American Baptist or American Christian isn't talking about mountains and Jerusalem.

A lot of times our problems have to do with buildings and pews and locations. Sometimes we'll get into arguments in churches over carpets, even. Searches over carpets even. Jesus is telling her the most important thing is not the mountain. The most important thing for the Jew is not Jerusalem.

For us, it's not the building or the location. Don't get me wrong, those things do matter. It's important we have a place to worship. And it was important for them to have a place to worship. But Jesus is telling her and us that there's something very important here.

Something very important here. Go with me back to our text there in John chapter 4, verses 21 through 24. Jesus said to her, woman believe me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

But an hour is coming, now is when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. For such people the Father seeks to be his worshipers. God is Spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Think about this. This woman has just encountered Jesus.

He has told her things about her life that he should not have known as a Jew. He should not have known about her marital situation. But he did. She rightly identified him as a prophet. And so she throws this question up here, this problem, she presents this thing to him.

Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, And you people, you Jews, you say that in Jerusalem is a place where men ought to worship. No doubt all her life she's heard tales and slanders and all sorts of things, maybe some bigotry that happens with tribal people as they say, we've got the right answers and they don't. And so she throws this to him to see what he's going to say. Maybe she thought that he would tell her, will the Samaritans have it wrong in the place, and we've got it right in the place that we have, but that's not the answer that he gives her. The issue wasn't a change in zip code that needed to happen.

The Samaritans, in particular this woman, didn't need to come down off the mountain and go to Jerusalem to make things right. He says to her, an hour is coming when it won't be in this mountain or in Jerusalem, that you'll worship the Father. And directly He says to her, you worship What you do not know. You haven't got a clue what you're doing. You're just going through motions.

We worship what we know for salvation is from the Jew. But an hour is coming and now is when true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such people the Father seeks to be his worshipers." Why is that? Why? Because God has changed his mind somehow? No!

Because God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. You see, That's the way it always was, but these people had made the main thing to be the location, and they were squabbling over locations. Locations. It was a heart issue and not a land issue. The locations were never to be the main focal point, but rather who are you worshiping?

As I thought about this, I thought about my own ministry. I've preached in church buildings that you wouldn't believe. Maybe you would, maybe you've been in church buildings you wouldn't believe. They must have cost thousands of thousands of dollars to build, maybe even millions of dollars in today's money. Some of them being a couple of two or three hundred years old, huge, Huge capacity, many rooms, buildings where a person might need GPS to get through them because you might get lost.

Places where you're almost afraid to get up and go to the bathroom because if you do You might not be able to find your way back. I remember One place I was at I went out of the auditorium the chapel area where where we met for worship And I went down a long hallway to find the restroom. And the only way I was able to find my way back is I was listening for the sound of preaching. That's how I was able to get back. Big buildings.

But I've also preached in very small buildings. Buildings that had no restroom inside the building where I had to go outside the building to an outhouse to go to the restroom. I've preached in homes, trailers even, simple homes, but nice homes. I've preached in great pulpits, nice big fancy pulpits that were built solid with great wood and designed really special for the preaching of God's Word. God's Word, but I've also preached on temporary boards and even ironing boards and other makeshift platforms.

I've met with God's people for church services in different places, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, North Carolina, Georgia. New Mexico, North Carolina, Georgia. Martin Lloyd Jones, very famous preacher from London said, and this has always And this has always been something that has really pricked me. But he said, if you cannot preach to five people with the same passion that you preach to a thousand, the sooner, the better you get out of the pulpit. I say amen and amen to that.

I'm going to say in token, As God's people, as the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, if all we can worship in is a fancy church building, then we've missed who God is. Indeed, in many churches all across this country and all across the West, I'm talking about Europe and places that are well and places that are well to do. If you take away the stained glass, the padded pews, the fancy pulpit, take away the air conditioning and the heat, the air conditioning in summer, the heat in the wintertime. Take those things away and most of the membership will scatter. I've seen, I've seen places, I've never had the opportunity to go, but in Papua New Guinea, where they'll just have just a makeshift place.

Maybe a roof over it, maybe not. Maybe they'll have a place to sit, but maybe not. The people will walk for miles to come together with God's people to hear the preaching of God's word. Same thing in South America. We're spoiled in this country.

We're spoiled in this country. Indeed, my grandfather on many occasions used to ask us the question at King's Edition Baptist Church. Their King's Edition Baptist Church is celebrating their 80th anniversary as a church. But he used to ask the question, if you came to church one Sunday morning and found a padlock on the door, what would you do? What would you do?

That question impacted me as a young man. No hypothetical anymore, is it? Jesus said it here in verses 21 through 24 to this Samaritan woman who was so attached to that mountain, but was brave enough to ask the question or to present the issue to Jesus. And the Holy Spirit presented it here in this text. And Jesus said in verse 24, God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Those people were tribal, They had opinions about the mountain in Jerusalem. By the way, some of those opinions still are pretty big over there in that part of the world. But here in this country people have opinions. The old country church, There's even songs about it. Some want a church in the mountains, some want a church in the city, some want a church with a steeple, some say no steeple, some want paddy pews, others want something more modern with chairs, Some want crosses on their church, others say no crosses.

Some will bicker over the color of the carpet. And on and on we go and pretty soon everybody's got an opinion and ready to fight over it and a lot of times that's why you can go into a city and this is true in any city in America and pretty soon you'll find Baptist Church over on that corner, Baptist Church over on that corner, Baptist Church over there, Baptist Church over there. And you go and you look in the history, And what were they bickering over? It wasn't over doctrine a lot of times. It was over preferences, over what worship looked like.

Nothing biblical. It was just over opinions about preferences. Opinions. It's good to have opinions as long as you remember that opinions are like armpits And that includes my opinion too. Everybody's got at least two armpits and they usually don't smell so good.

Especially when you get into an issue like this and it becomes the top thing that people begin to look at and squabble over. Guess what? You know who the true worshipers were? Not just the Jews, not just the Samaritans, but Jews and Samaritans. It's not about the mountain, It's not about the city, not about Jerusalem, not about up in the mountain.

Location is important, but it's not the primary importance. That's what I'm trying to point out here. But even to this day, if you go to Jerusalem, whether you're Jewish or Christian, you'll find people who think that there's some importance to the city of Jerusalem. There's a wall still a part of the old city, And there are people who gather there for prayer. Hear me now?

I'm thankful for the history of the old city of Jerusalem, but your prayers and my prayers are heard by Almighty God from here, same as what they are heard from that wall in Jerusalem. There's a river, a river in that area, called the River Jordan. We know that that's where Jesus was baptized. And I thank God for that river. I thank God for its history.

But if you go to Israel and you're dunked in the water by some parachurch organization, that's not real baptism. Even if you were to get someone from this church to go over there and baptize you scripturally in the River Jordan. You don't have any more scriptural baptism than anybody else in this church. There's no magic in that water. You can't come back and say, oh well, I'm better baptized than you because I was baptized where Jesus was.

You see, You could have been baptized in a bathtub as long as you were immersed with the proper authority and you were saved when you went under. You know, there's just as much in it as what there is in the River Jordan. Well, just to kind of bring it down to where we are today, You're no less a Christian to meet in a house than if you meet in a building this Lord's Day. And worship is just as serious here as what it would be if we were meeting in a church building, you see. That's what I'm trying to drive here.

It's about true worshipers. There was an old Puritan and he said, He said this in the 1600s, he said, he said antiquity and the practice of some is a crooked rule to follow when it contradicts the current of the scriptures. Antiquity and the practice of some is a crooked rule to follow when it contradicts the current of the scriptures. So I was thinking back to my days at King's Edition. You know?

Just like every other church, I can remember, I can remember some of the things that we did. I'll just give you an example. My grandfather had a cassette tape ministry. And that was a big ministry. He would record all of his sermons on cassette tape, and he would mail, King's Edition would mail those things out all over, all over the place.

My mom was involved in that, and it was a big ministry. A lot of people were blessed with the, with the recordings of James Hobbes' sermons. Can you imagine how ridiculous that would be if I held on to that idea? And I said we have to record all my sermons by cassette tapes because that's the way James Hobbes did it, my grandfather. But that's the way some people are with worship and religion.

And religion. The reality is, our situation here, just to make mention of this here and now, Our situation here, we hope to be temporary. Meeting in a home like this. Indeed, there are many churches who met in homes temporarily until they were able to get out of the situation that they were in. One reason or another.

But the reality is that for the first 200 years of church history, 200 years, Two centuries, for the first 200 years of church history, there is absolutely no mention of any church having a dedicated building. The early Christians met in homes, even in the temple, and in synagogues across the Roman Empire. Sometimes they even met in caves and other places. And other places. But Jesus brings this woman's attention to a subject of greater importance this centuries old squabble, this disagreement over the location.

That is that there is coming a time when public worship of the Father will not be confined to just one place, regardless of whether Jew or Samaritan or even Gentile, won't be confined to just one place. How we worship and be in what we believe about God. Not just aware, but how? How? God is Spirit.

God is Spirit. What does he mean when he says God is Spirit? Well, A.H. Strong in his book on theology says this implies negatively that God does not matter. Not that God doesn't matter, but that God does not matter.

God is not dependent on matter. The God is not only spirit, but he is pure spirit. He is not only not matter, but he is no necessary connection with matter. John MacArthur, I liked what he wrote on this. He said, this verse represents the classical statement on the nature of God as Spirit.

The phrase means that God is invisible. Over in Colossians chapter 1 in verse 15, Colossians 1 and verse 15 says, Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation? Again, in 1 Timothy chapter 1 and verse 17 says, Now to the King of all the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. And in that famous passage in Hebrews, the roll call of faith, in Hebrews chapter 11, talking about Moses in verse 27, the writer of Hebrews says, By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the rage of the king, For he endured as seeing him Who is unseen? He is unseen.

You see, God is not man, not physical or material like man. The word order of this phrase puts an emphasis on spirit. The statement is emphatic. Man could never comprehend the invisible God unless he revealed himself as He did in Scripture and in the Incarnation, meaning through Jesus Christ. You see, apart from what we read in the Bible, this is why the world throughout the centuries and all around the places, this ships.

But even Paul, as he spoke to the Athenians, and he saw all of their idols and everything, He told them in Acts chapter 17 and verse 24, He said to them, The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands, Nor is he served by human hands as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all people life and breath and all things." So, God is spirit. So, God is Spirit. That's not all the scripture says here about Him, is it? Because the Bible tells us that God is spirit and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Spirit and in truth.

To worship in spirit is to worship spiritually. And to worship in truth is to worship truly. A.W. Pink observed that these are not two different kinds of worship, but two aspects of the same worship. To worship God in spirit and in truth is to worship Him in the innermost soul, to pay unto Him the homage of reverence.

Because He's God, we worship Him. This is why we gather. Not because of the location. We don't gather because of the mountain or because of the city. We gather because of who God is.

Regardless of where it's at. It may be a cave. It may be in a house. It may be in a trailer. It may be in a bunker somewhere if persecution comes, but wherever it is, we gather because of who God is.

Because He is the one who is to be worshiped. Jesus' point here is that a person must worship, not simply by external conformity to religious rituals and places, not by traditions of men or of the fathers, as important as they were, and we thank God for them, but inwardly in spirit with the proper heart. This is why in the New Testament there was always this clash between Jesus and the Pharisees. The Pharisees had everything going outwardly, didn't they? Outwardly, they had the best of everything, going religiously, but there was a clash.

And we see that being brought out here in this text. Jesus was looking for worshipers in spirit and in truth. The reference to truth refers to worship of God consistent with the revealed Scripture. Jesus said it in John 17. John 17 in his prayer there in John 17 and verse 17.

Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth. Sanctify them by the truth. Your Word is truth. But also, it must always be Christ-centered. Worshipping in spirit and in truth must always be Christ-centered.

John 14 and verse 6. Jesus said to him, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me. And so as we come together as a church, whether we're meeting here, whether we're in a church building, whether we're in a park, wherever it is, it is for the purpose of worship. And worship is always to Christ-centered according to the Scriptures.

Always according to the Scriptures and always Christ-centered. Yet in our seeker-sensitive, Americanized models, so many times we wonder, we wonder what do others think about us. And we pick on the liberal churches a lot of times, but what about us? The wise Solomon wrote, trembling before man brings a snare, but he who trusts in Yahweh will be set securely on high. That's Proverbs 29 verse 25.

How much has this infiltrated our thinking? To wonder about what others think before what Almighty God thinks. What do we do when we have a visitor? Do we worry about what the visitor thinks above what God thinks? We should consider those things because there is a ditch to fall on, and that is with some churches, some churches get to the point where they don't care about what other people think, and they get into this mentality that the only people who like the service are the three people who show up for church every Sunday, and they don't even care about what God thinks or what anybody else thinks, and the church ends of dying.

There is that danger. We ought to consider above all things what God all things what God thinks. And then we ought to think about how things are for You know, things like, things like, well, Questions we've got to ask ourselves. Like, I wonder how often do we think about what does God think about our witnessing or our worship? But then also, as we think about this, how many times have we held back from witnessing out of fear that the subject of church might come up and we have to say, oh, our church is small, or oh, we're meeting at our own.

Don't be embarrassed about the location, don't be embarrassed about the size. Put God, Christ, put the gospel at the forefront, and if that's the reason why you're worshiping, why you're worshiping, understand that that will be the attractiveness for everybody else. Matthew chapter 28. So we bring this to a close. Jesus commissioned His church.

Jesus commissioned His church. He gives them this commission. In verses 18-20, Jesus came up and spoke to them saying, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep all that I commanded you, behold I am with you always even to the end of the age." When Jesus commissioned them, His church had no savings account, no building, and they were only a small group. Indeed, from there, That's where Christianity spread.

I would like to encourage you this morning. It's not about who we are. It's about who God is. Even in our text, even in our text, we see something great happening with this woman. And I love that it's a woman.

You know, it could have been a man, it could have been anyone, but he but it's a woman that he met, a woman from Samaria. And lo and behold, she got so excited about the things that were happening in her life when she met the Lord and in the things that Jesus had done with her. And she took that message and she told others. She didn't even have a church. She's just her.

And verse 39 tells us, And verse 39 tells us, from that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman who bore witness. He told me all the things that I've done. Let's, as we think about the existence and attributes of God, God is spirit. Worship him in spirit and in truth. Let's think about these things, take them and apply them to our own lives.

Take the word of God, Be serious about our worship. Worship Him in spirit and truth. Invite others to join with us. Get beyond our insecurities, our fears, all that. We're small, yes.

We know how much, yes, but we have our God and He's everything. And I hope that we can be encouraged through this, Realize what God has done with others, even small.
