In the sermon titled 'Three Sins for Girls to Avoid and Three Virtues to Adorn,' Trent Moody addresses young girls and their fathers, highlighting three specific sins to avoid and the corresponding virtues to cultivate. The first sin is argumentativeness, characterized by a contentious attitude, which should be countered with amiability, defined as having a friendly and pleasant demeanor. Proverbs is cited to emphasize the destructive nature of a contentious spirit and the peace brought by amiability, exemplified by Abigail's wise and gentle actions in 1 Samuel. The second sin, vanity, involves excessive pride in one's appearance or accomplishments, and is countered by modesty, an internal quality reflecting humility and godliness, not just in clothing but in behavior. The sermon warns against the fleeting nature of physical beauty and stresses inner godliness, referencing Proverbs and 1 Peter to illustrate true modesty. Finally, the sin of subversiveness, or manipulative behavior, is contrasted with the virtue of submissiveness, which entails respecting authority and fostering a God-centered home. Examples from Delilah's and Solomon's stories illustrate the dangers of manipulation, while submissive behavior aligns with biblical teachings. The sermon concludes by urging self-examination of these traits and discussions with family to cultivate the recommended virtues.
All right, so I have, last night I spoke to you fathers very pointedly and was hoping that would be a blessing for us to learn how we speak and the type of inheritance that we leave for our daughters and the blessing we can be. This morning I want to speak specifically to you girls. That doesn't mean fathers need to turn off their hearing, so pay attention dads as well because I want you to be able to look at these things in the lives of your daughters to help them because you're the head of the family and you need to help them in these areas. So what I wanna speak about, and there's gonna be various passages, so you're not gonna be able to turn to a text. It's gonna be a little hard for you.
So just follow along with your ears. These are just three sins of girls to avoid and then the virtues to adorn. So three sins to avoid and then three virtues that are opposite of those things to adorn yourselves with, girls. There's many more that we could list but these were the three that came to my mind so I want to see just self-examination here. See if this is the things that you're struggling with.
I prayed about this that God would help me to hit home and I pray that it will. So girls I want you to be aware of some of the temptations that you either have now if you're a little bit older or you will have as women. You're going to have certain temptations that come upon you and the temptation itself is not necessarily sinful but what you do with it if you act upon it and if you're meditating upon that that can become sinful. So again these are by no means all of the temptations that you're going to find yourself dealing with, but some of them. And I want to deal with the opposite of those things though that you need to adorn yourself with that will help you to fight against that temptation.
So number one, we'll jump right in. Argumentative attitudes or even this could be in this form of speech but just having a tendency to be argumentative and then I want to counter that with being amiable. I'll define those two things. Contentious is the biblical word that we see here, causing or liking to cause arguments. Causing or liking to cause arguments.
Amiable means having or displaying a friendly or pleasant dismeanor or manner. So the sin of argumentativeness and mainly this is going to be a lot of scripture that I just want to prove my point and then I'm going to give you an example at the end of each point. There's three of these again. So Proverbs 21, 9, better to dwell in the corner of a house top than in a house shared with a contentious woman. That's a shocking statement.
Mr. Brown last night spoke about how womanhood actually creates a culture in the home that is a blessing to that home, but however if there is sinfulness in your behavior and in your attitudes, you can actually do more to undermine manhood and biblical family than almost anything the world has to throw. If you are not willingly coming into obedience to the Lord and submissiveness to your father but ultimately to the Lord, you can do great damage to your home. So are you argumentative? Another is again Proverbs 21 19.
The Bible says better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and angry woman so on a housetop or out in the wilderness somewhere in August my son and I are going to go to the wilderness of Alaska. And I get this mindset, it's better to dwell with the grizzly bears than with an argumentative and angry contentious woman. There's so much girls that you can do to promote loveliness and beauty within your home and we'll look at that in just a moment. Proverbs 27 15, a continual dripping on a very rainy day. Well that's fitting isn't it?
Did any of y'all hear a continual dripping last night. Hopefully it wasn't coming through your tent and hitting you on the forehead while you tried to sleep, but imagine that scene there, this continual dripping on a rainy day, and a contentious woman are alike. This is how the Bible, this is how God describes women who are contentious or argumentative. So that is the sin. Also Proverbs 14, 1, the wise woman builds her house but a foolish pulls it down with her hands.
She takes that thing which God has placed her there to nurture and to care for and to build up and to edify but yet if she's foolish she's tearing it down she's not a she's not a builder she's a destroyer and so girls this is a temptation that you can have. Proverbs 9 13, a foolish woman is clamorous. She is simple and knows nothing. This clamorous means, listen to this, murmuring, growling, roaring, boisterous, to growl like a dog, growl like wicked men, like a bear. You can be like a bear or a growling dog within your home.
So girls, this could be a temptation for you. Mr. Brown just spoke about how do you wake up in the morning? Are you a growling dog in the morning when you wake up and you're don't look at me don't talk to me. You are gonna set an atmosphere within your home you even as a as a young daughter you will do this but as you grow older and then as Lord willing you become wives and mothers you're going to set something you're going to set this atmosphere of the home.
Here's an example I mentioned this last night Job's wife listen to what it says about Job's wife. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head, and he took for himself a pot shard with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. And then his wife said to him, do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die. His wife said that to him.
But he said to her, you speak as one of the foolish women speak, shall we indeed accept good from God and shall we not accept adversity? In all this, Job did not sin with his lips. I think the contrast there, though it is left unsaid, his wife did sin with her lips. And so that is the negative, that's the temptation, that's the sin that you're going to struggle with. Are you going to be contentious and argumentative or are you going to be amiable, meaning to have or displaying a friendly and pleasant manner.
Proverbs 11-16, a gracious woman retains honor. This grace here is kindness, it's kind-heartedness, it's compassion. When another sibling gets injured, how do you respond to that? Maybe a little one's crying and they got hurt. Ah, suck it up.
You know, be tough, be a man, be a big girl, or do you show compassion? Do you show tenderness there? Proverbs 31 26, she opens her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue is the law of kindness. So this is the opposite of that thing of being contentious. You want to be amiable.
An example of this is in 1st Samuel regarding Abigail. Listen to what Abigail did. Then David said to Abigail, blessed is the Lord God of Israel who sent you this day to meet me and blessed is your advice and blessed are you because you have kept me this day from coming to bloodshed and from avenging myself with my own hands. Blessed are you, he said, and blessed is your advice. So girls, understand there can be a grave temptation there, but also you can have this other aspect that you can be kind and compassionate, You can be a blessing to your household.
You can speak those things. You can give godly advice to maybe other siblings or even to mom and dad sometimes. Boy, my children have great advice sometimes to bring in a godly counsel. The second thing, the second sin that you're going to struggle with is vanity. Vanity, but the opposite of that that I want to instruct you with is modesty, but don't let your mind immediately run to clothing because that's not what I'm going to talk about.
Vanity is excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or accomplishments. Let me read that again. Vanity is excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or accomplishments, whereas modesty is the quality or state of being unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's appearance or abilities. So Proverbs 31, 30 says, charm is deceitful and beauty is passing. Why be proud of that which is just going to pass away?
I promise you the older you get no matter how beautiful you may be in your youth there will come a day in which that outward external beauty will pass away. It is a passing thing and Proverbs 11 says this, as a ring of gold in a swine snout so is a lovely woman who lacks discretion. So don't be vain regarding your external appearances or accomplishments because what's going to happen is if you lack discretion, if you lack modesty, you're going to be like a pig with a golden ring in its nose and it's pretty useless isn't it because pigs all they do is root around in the mud and muck and so it's a foolish example or picture that he gives us here of how ridiculous that is. Listen to what Isaiah says Isaiah 3 16 says moreover the Lord says because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, making a jingling with their feet, So they had these little anklet bracelets or little bells and they would mince with their feet so that they would jingle when they walk. That was the cultural cool thing to do.
That's what God was pointing out. You're making a jingling with your feet. He says, therefore the Lord will strike you with a scab. The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion and the Lord will uncover their secret parts. In that day the Lord will take away the finery, the jingling anklets, the scarves and the crescents, the pendants, the bracelets and the veils, the headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands.
Boy did they have a lot of stuff that they put on. Imagine how much time that took. How much time did it take to put all that on? How much of the external were they looking at? How much of the external were they looking at?
How much of the external were they trying to make fine and be vain about? He goes on, the perfume boxes, the charms and the rings and the nose jewels, the festive apparel and the mantles, the outer garments, the purses and the mirrors, the fine linen and the turbans and the robes and so it shall be instead of a sweet smell there shall be a stench instead of a sash a rope instead of well-set hair baldness instead of a rich robe a girding of sackcloth and branding instead of beauty. Vanity. Beware of vanity girls. God has given you a beauty We spoke about the beauty last night that fathers need to speak into your life and prepare you for, but also and dads be aware, pay attention if you see within your daughters vanity.
An excessive amount of pride or admiration of one's own appearance or their accomplishments. That is a deadly sin. In 1st Peter 5 he says, likewise you younger people submit to your yourselves to your elders, yes all of you be submissive to one or one another and be clothed with humility for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. An example of this vain woman is found in Proverbs 7, the Proverbs 7 woman, the strange woman. There's a woman and there a woman met him with the entire of with the attire of a harlot and a crafty heart.
She was loud and rebellious. Her feet would not stay at home. This is the opposite of the next point that I want to make to you, this modesty. Now modesty, the quality or state of being unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's appearance and abilities. So I want you to understand that modesty, girls, is not simply the things that you wear.
I've seen extremely modest-clothed ladies that are extremely immodest in their behavior and attitudes. So it's not just this external thing that we're looking for. Modesty actually begins in your heart and it can be it's reflected sometimes in your clothing but it's reflected also in your attitude and that's really what I want to talk about in the opposite of this vanity. You can again you can wear the modest clothing and think very very highly of yourself because you're wearing the modest clothing. You can become vain in your modesty and thinking highly of yourself.
Modesty primarily though is an issue of the heart. 1st Timothy 2, 8, I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting and in like manner that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel and propriety and moderation not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing but which is proper for women professing godliness with good works." You know the Bible doesn't give us a real clear definition of exactly what modest clothing looks like but we know this the clarity comes here that the external should profess or should promote or proclaim I should say that which is professed on the inside and that is proper for women professing godliness with good works. How should you look on the outside? Well you should look just like what you should be on the inside, a woman who is professing godliness with good works. That should be the example.
Proverbs 31 again, charm is deceitful and beauty is passing but a woman who fears the Lord she shall be praised." This is the modesty that you should put on. 1st Peter 3 says, wives likewise be submissive to your own husbands that even if some do not obey the word they without a word may be won by the conduct of their wives when they observe your chase conduct accompanied by fear. Do not let your adornment be merely outward, arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel. Rather, let it be the hidden person of the heart with the incorruptible beauty. Remember I said earlier the external beauty is corruptible, it's passing it says, but here the internal, the hidden person of the heart has an incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit which is very precious in the sight of God.
Girls whenever you hear something is very precious in the sight of God you should perk up to that. What is that thing that is very precious in the sight of God? That's what I want to do. Also in Titus Scott preached on this recently this that the Word of God be not blasphemed. If you ever hear something that causes you to blaspheme the Word of God, take note, don't do that.
When you see this, it's precious in the sight of God, that's what I want to do. And so that is the modesty that God requires. An example of this again is found in 1st Peter 3, for in this manner in former times the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves being submissive to their own husbands as Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him Lord whose daughters you are if you do good and are not afraid With any terror. This is a fearless conference. Okay, we're about fearless daughters And if you're not if you're fearless you're going to be able to submit yourself under God and under the authority that's in your life.
If you're fearful, you're going to be going after the things of the world, you're going to be vain in your thinking and in your attire, and you're going to be argumentative so that you can get your own way. But this last one is this, are you going to be subversive or submissive? This is going to be a temptation for you and when I say subversive what I mean is having this temptation to manipulate either people or circumstances. This will be a temptation for you girls to manipulate things to get your way, to manipulate people, to get them to do what you want them to do. It's a grave temptation.
So it means to undermine the power or authority of someone or scheming in order to take control. This is when when God pronounced the the curses in the book of Genesis after the sin of Adam and Eve, one of the things that God said was is that your desire will be for your husband but he shall rule over you. And so there was this desire that you can be subversive or manipulative to try to control a situation. God has not called you to control every situation. He's actually called you to come under your authority and be submissive and we'll talk about that in just a moment to end it up.
Judges 16 says afterward it happened that he loved a woman in the valley of Sauric whose name was Delilah and the lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, entice him and find out where his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him that we may bind him to afflict him. And every one of us will give you 1, 100 pieces of silver. So Delilah said to Samson, Please tell me where your great strength lies and with what you may be bound to afflict you. She was wanting to be subversive and manipulative in order for money. So there's temptations there that's another temptation of the temptation of money or wealth.
In 1 Kings we see, but King Solomon loved many foreign women and as well as the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites and from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel, you shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you." So listen to this manipulation or this subversion. Surely they will turn away your heart after other gods." Solomon clung to these in love and he had 700 wives, princesses, and 300 concubines, and his wives turned his heart away. For it was so when Solomon was old that his wives turned his heart after other gods and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God as was the heart of his father David." So girls, one day when you're a wife and even now you need to understand that the Lord has given you great influence as a woman. He's given you this influence but it is also a responsibility. You can turn your home away from the Lord by your behavior or you can turn your home towards the Lord.
Here and once you become a wife you will have this influence and responsibility as well. You can turn your husband's heart away from the Lord or towards the Lord. So you don't want to be subversive to the things of God, you want to be submissive to the things of God. Use your life girls to influence and to turn him and turn your home towards the Lord. And then lastly this submissiveness.
First Peter again, for in this manner in former times the holy women who trusted in God adorned themselves being submissive to their own husbands as Sarah obeyed Abraham calling him Lord. Then also in Titus 2, the older women likewise that they be reverent in behavior not slanderers not giving them much wine teachers of good things that they admonish the young women to love their husbands to love their children to be discreet chased homemakers good obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed." So girls these are the three temptations to sin that I wanted you to avoid and to warn you of and then also the three virtues that I want you to adorn. So let's take just a few moments to speak among yourselves with your father and I want you to talk about these things. Are these things that you see in your life, are they a temptation for you, And then how might you cast down that temptation and turn from it and adorn yourself with that opposite virtue? There may be other things that I didn't mention.
I'm sure there are. You can talk about those as well, but these are the three that I wanted to bring to your attention right now. So go ahead and take just a few minutes and speak about that.
