In Peter Allison's sermon titled 'Time & Eternity', he reflects on Psalm 90 to explore the biblical perspective on time and its fleeting nature. The sermon emphasizes the significance of recognizing God as the creator of time and our role as creatures constrained by it. Allison discusses four truths declared by Moses in Psalm 90: God is the creator of time, our days are short, we are under God's judgment, and the importance of turning back to God. The sermon underscores the necessity of numbering our days to gain wisdom and encourages setting godly goals. Five prayer requests made by Moses are highlighted, including seeking God's mercy, praying for strength to fulfill God-given goals, and ensuring God's will is done on earth. The sermon concludes with a call to surrender our lives to God's purposes and recognize His lordship over all aspects of our existence.
Please turn in your Bible. Psalm 90. We have reached the end of our look at the life of Christ and what we had set out to consider there. We had one week left in the year 2018. And I thought it would fit well to take one week and preach a New Year's sermon.
Not something I have done before, but something that I think is, as we'll see, an eminently biblical thought. Psalm 90. Hear God's word. A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth.
Or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. You turn man to destruction and say, return, O children of men. For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night you carry them away like a flood. They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up.
In the morning it flourishes and grows up. In the evening it is cut down and withers. For we have been consumed by your anger and by your wrath we are terrified. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. For all our days have passed away in your wrath, we finish our years like a sigh.
The days of our lives are seventy years, and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow. For it is soon cut off and we fly away. Who knows the power of your anger? For as the fear of you, so is your wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Return, O Lord, how long, and have compassion on your servants. O, satisfy us early with your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all of our days Make us glad according to the days in which you have afflicted us the years in which we have seen evil lest you let your work appear to your servants and your glory to their children And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands for us. Yes, establish the work of our hands. Thus far the reading of God's word May He bless its reading and be praised at its hearing. Heavenly Father, we thank you once again for your Word.
It is truth. In it is great wisdom. And by it, the simple are made wise. And So we ask, Father, that you would give to us that wisdom this morning that is from Your Word through the instruction of Your Holy Spirit. We look to You, Father, the author and the finisher of our faith, the source of all knowledge and wisdom.
To you the light of the world and the light by which we see. For you have Shined into our hearts the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ So we ask that That we may see you this morning that we may hear your voice with these our ears We ask Lord that your Spirit might accomplish all of this. And we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, every year the time, the years go by faster and faster, or so it seems.
And so it seems to many people, because that is certainly one of the probably the common expressions that you are hearing right about now where did 2018 go it seems like it was just starting that sentiment isn't new to our day we might think that it is we might think that our day is a day of an age of people being rushed and hurried and time flying fast, but this is An experience that is shared by men across the centuries. Many of the ancient tombstones would have an hourglass with wings. Time flies. Time is actually one of the more difficult entities to explain actually. It's something that we all know, even the youngest of us understand that now is now and the future is later.
We understand this time. The very young among us may not have the same appreciation for it or the same understanding of it as those who are older. But we all understand, we all live with time. And yet, it is one of the more difficult things to explain. The smartest of men among us cannot explain the passage of time with the laws of physics.
Why does time only go in one direction? Why can't we remember the future? Why don't eggs unbreak? Why can't Humpty Dumpty put himself together again? Or all the king's men, for that matter.
Now there is something that we call entropy that would explain this one direction of time, that the earth is running down. We all know that if you have a hot room on a cold day, the heat just wants to escape. You don't find the heat outside wanting to come into your room. We understand that. We understand that things get dissipated.
The scientists call that running down. The earth is running down. This entropy is increasing. But that only explains this passage of time, this linear direction of time, If one admits that the world is in fact running down you see that's contrary to the very evolutionary idea that the earth is Getting more ordered that this ordered universe has come out of something less orderly Some have reason that well, maybe there's other worlds outside of this world It also means that the earth has started in a very special state, that of a very low entropy, that of great order. And it's becoming less order.
And that, too, is a contradiction to the evolutionary assumption. And so why is the Earth running down? Most scientists today that study these things will say they don't really know why. Because it requires having some presuppositions that are fundamentally opposed to the humanist, pagan view of our world. It's something that requires us to acknowledge that God is the Creator of time, and that we are creatures of time.
God is the Creator of time. And we are but creatures of time. It means our life It's fundamentally, inherently constrained by time. Just like the water of the ocean is constraining for the fish that are in it. This is the world that they live in.
They know no other world. Life is impossible outside of being surrounded by a body of water. And it's something like what time is for us. We are we are creatures of time. God is the creator of time and He is the one who has ordered and governs this world with time And He's made us subject to it.
That's by His decree. And everything that happens, happens because God has an appointment in His calendar for that event that has happened. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. That's how this psalm opens Is that we God is our dwelling place we live Paul says in the Lord we live and move and have our being This man of God Moses is man of God is the word of God calls him acknowledges that it is in God that we live. This God who is the creator of time, who has made all things in the world and made time itself and made us creatures of time.
He is the one who is from everlasting to everlasting. And when Isaiah described the Messiah as the everlasting Father, he was attributing to Jesus this uniqueness of being the creator of time. To be the father of something is to be somebody who originates it. To be the father of modern medicine is to be somebody who played a foundational role in whatever it is that you're the father of. The father of, we might say Henry Ford, is the father of automation.
Means he's the one who originated the idea. And so for Isaiah to describe Jesus as the everlasting Father is to ascribe to Jesus one of these unique attributes of God. That is to be the Father of time, to be the Creator of time, but not a subject of that which He has created. God is outside of time. He's not constrained by time in any way.
But He exists at every time. The same yesterday, today, and forever, but also Jesus says, who is, who was, and who is to come. We though are creatures of time, and this New Year, as we are about to embark on another year, we change the year of our calendar to reflect the years of Christ's reign as the mediatorial king, just serves to remind us that we are creatures of time. That time is something that we are constrained by. It's a part of God's governance.
It's a part of God's providence of how he rules his world. That we are creatures of time and that our life is to be ordered and governed by time. What is the difference in one sense between the person that's completely homeless on the side of the road and people who live in houses. In a very real way, when you when you begin to talk to these people and you begin to try and help them, one of the most fundamental problems is they do not, they refuse to be governed by the passage of time. They refuse to have any discipline that says I need to do this now.
That now at this time I need to get up. That now at this time I need to go to bed. That now at this time I need to get up. That now at this time I need to go to bed. That now at this time I need to show up over in this location.
That now at this time I need to do something. Most of the people that are homeless is because they refuse to be governed by the passage of time. They refuse to have the self-discipline to say to themselves that now, at this time, I need to do something. And it's to say, I don't need to do anything right now. God is the creator of time.
We are creatures of that time. And This text here, this psalm, gives us a very important instruction. The heart of this psalm is, so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. So teach us to measure, to count the time that God has given to us and by which our life is marked. In order that, we may apply our hearts into wisdom.
It's saying that if we don't do this, we can't be wise. We can't live in a way that displays any wisdom. So there are in this psalm four truths that Moses declares. On the basis of those four truths then there are five prayer requests that Moses makes Four truths for us to consider this morning on the on the eve of a new year, marking the passage of time, the passage of one more year, and five requests that Moses asks of the Lord, five prayer requests for us to pursue in this new year. And the first we've looked at, and that is that God is the creator of time.
We in verse 9 it says, we are brought to an end. We come to an end. The days of our life reach an ending point, but God is eternal. God ordains the times and the seasons of our life. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.
You have been that one in whom we live, that one who is our protection, our refuge. You return It's huge. You return man to dust. It's God that returns us to dust. To return us to dust is to end our life.
Or it's also to say you return man to destruction. You turn man to destruction. It is the Lord who brings these trials into our life. It is the Lord who brings events into our life. And he says in those events, there to be reminders to us, God is saying in them, return, return to me, oh children of men.
Turn back to me. Repent of going in your own direction and turn back to me. When the Lord sends us trials, when he sends in time these tribulations, when we go to a funeral and contemplate and think about the fact that one day we will return to dust by God's appointment. There is a day in God's appointment book that we will return to dust, that God will turn us back into the dust from which he made us. There is that day.
It is appointed unto men once to die. Who appointed it unto us once to die? God has. That day is in his appointment book and none of us know that day. But it's there.
The Word of God has told us that that day is in God's appointment book, that we will return unto dust. Our duty is to number our days, is to remember that that day is coming and to look at the days of life that we have been given. And when God sends these appointments, to remember that He is calling us to turn back to Him, to repent of going our own way and doing our own thing and seeking our own wisdom and asking and calling us to come back to Him, to remember his wisdom, to seek his ways, to remember that it is he that is our dwelling place. It is in him that we live and move and have our being. It is for his glory that we have been created and that every day that we are to number is to be a day that we give thanks for his blessings to us, that we seek to use and to dedicate our life, our gifts, our strengths, our abilities, to give those to serve the Lord, to give those to see that His name is glorified, that His will is done here on earth.
God ordains the times and the seasons of our life. And specifically, the time is short. That time is short. In fact, they are as nothing. Verses 5 and 6 and 10.
You carry them away like a flood. They are like a sleep. In the morning they are like grass which grows up. In the morning it flourishes and grows. In the evening it dies.
That is how God is describing the days of our life. It is but a moment. We are here and we are gone. So this perception that the time is flying by, it is an accurate one. Our time is flying by.
The days of our life, if you are young and you think you have a long time before you. The Bible says you don't. You don't. Your life is but a moment. It is but a vapor.
It is but like a blade of grass that grows up, it turns green, it is cut down and it withers. The days of our lives are 70 years. 80 if there is strength, 100 if there is even more strength that is given. But the normal expected life, the Bible tells us, is about 70 years. That is in fact what we see in terms of life expectancy.
Some 70 years, Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes lower. But that's about the life expectancy and has been for several thousand years. Yes, it goes up and down. But about 70 years, That's nothing compared to a thousand years. But even the people that lived a thousand years, people like, or close to a thousand years, people like Noah or Adam or Methuselah who lived over 900 years, 950, 969 years.
Even their life, which we think is a long time, It's hard for us to imagine living a thousand years. Just the years between 80 and 100, somebody who is 100 and somebody who is 80. There's a whole generation in there. Now think of somebody who is not 80, but not 100, not 800, but a thousand years. That's a long time in our view.
But God's word here says no. It's just a moment. A thousand years is like a moment in God's sight. He's not a creature of time, but a thousand years is nothing compared to eternity. It's nothing compared to eternity.
A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it's passed. It's because God is not a creature of time, but it's also because a thousand years is simply not a long time in God's economy, in terms of eternity. And you know, He has made us. We have a beginning, But he has given us a soul that never dies, never ceases to exist. It will exist into eternity.
If our life was simply this earth, this fleeting thing on the earth, then why wouldn't people eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we cease to exist there might be a there might be some difficult times if you party too hard you may have a hangover the next morning. If you party your whole life away, you might have some pains at the end. What's that compared to having some fun for the short moment of our life? That's not what Moses says. Not what he says at all.
Our days are short. This life is fleeting away, but that's because man is under God's judgment. That's the fourth truth of this Psalm. That we are under the effects of God's judgment. For we have been consumed by your anger and by your wrath, we are terrified.
You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. And for all our days have passed away in your wrath, and we finish our years like a sigh. Brothers and sisters, we live in this earth under God's curse. And it is appointed unto men once to die and after this there is a judgment. And Moses prayer is that in light of this knowledge that we will all stand before the judgment seat of God, that we are all under his wrath and condemnation for our sin.
This world that we live in has been cursed because of man's sin. It is because of this that Moses says, teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts under wisdom. See, God knows everything about us. Every sin that we have ever committed, everything that we have ever done that maybe nobody else may know about. Might have been something done in our heart, our thoughts, our motives.
To God it's all projected up onto the wall and He sees it all. Our secret sins are in the light of His countenance. So Moses says, so because of that, because we are under God's wrath, because our days are passed away in His wrath. Because, who knows the power of God's anger. For as the fear of you, so is your wrath.
Therefore, Moses says, therefore so teach us to number our days. Time is a gift of God and it is to be prized. And to waste it is to desecrate the gift that God has given to us. To waste our time is to desecrate God's gift. We need to count our days.
That means we need to learn to count We need to learn to count we can't number our days can we if if we don't know how to count So do you do you all know how to count? Those of you that are very young, if you don't know, it's time to learn how to count. But not just counting like going one, two, three, four, That's a good place to start counting. If we're to number our days and to count our blessings, there are many ways that we need to learn to count. This includes more efficient means of counting like addition.
That's just a more efficient way of counting. Multiplication is a more efficient way of ultimately counting, of doing addition. Exponents are more efficient way of doing multiplication, which is a more efficient way of doing addition, which is a more efficient way of counting, right? These are all, ultimately, all of these tools are just counting tools. Even calculus.
People say, well, why do I have to learn calculus? And I grant, not everybody needs to learn calculus. We all have different callings and different things that we need to count. And so I'm not here saying that everybody needs to learn calculus. But we need to know that calculus is simply a way of counting.
It's a way of counting things that don't have numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, but other things in between all those numbers. What's between 1 and 2? We probably know about 1 and a half, but there's a lot more numbers between 1 and 2. And calculus is simply a way of counting these things. It's a way of counting the volume of something, the area of something, the weight of something.
So calculus, you can think of calculus as just an efficient way of counting things that are very hard to count. And for those that are called to count those things, it's an important tool that God has given us. But to Number our days is much more than just counting them. To number our days is to prioritize our time. So that not only is it not wasted on fruitless activity, but it is not spent on less fruitful activity.
To count our days, to number our days, is to value our time, to prioritize it, and to seek to do that which is most fruitful with the time that we have been given. And many times wisdom is in deciding which is more fruitful, which is more important between two things that might have some importance, both of them. Which is more important? Wasting time is often not inactivity, but it's activity without a good purpose. It's not asking the question, what God would have us do.
What would the Lord have us do with the time that He's given to us? What would He have? He is about to give us a new year. What would he have us do with this year, with this time, should he give us this year? We should ask him.
That should be something that we think about, something that we reflect on. I need to do more of that. Writing things down is one way to do that. Writing goals down. And from year to year, writing Goals down for the next five years, the next ten years, the next twenty years, writing goals down for your life.
And then coming back to read them, reflect on them, and to update them even. I know there are some goals that I wrote down years ago that have come to pass. When I wrote them down, I had a hard time seeing how that would happen. There are still some goals that I haven't reached. And I still have a hard time seeing how they might happen.
But I know that God is able to do it. You see, our prioritized activity adds up over a lifetime when it is focused in a direction. Do you know what the difference between a piece of steel that we call a magnet, maybe you have some on your refrigerator, and if you have things on your refrigerator that kind of stick to the wall of the refrigerator all on their own, it's probably a magnet. And then a piece of steel, a piece of metal that doesn't stick to the refrigerator. What's the difference between those two pieces of steel, of metal, of iron?
What's the difference? Well the difference is in the metal that sticks to the refrigerator, all the little magnetic domains are all lined up and pointing in the same direction. And in the steel that doesn't stick to the refrigerator, they're all there, but they're all pointing in different directions. And when you add them all up, they cancel each other out. In the metal that sticks to the refrigerator, all those little magnetic domains, they're all pointing in the same direction.
And so their effect is to add, to create this magnetic force that sticks the metal to the refrigerator. You know, if you want to walk somewhere and you take one step in this direction and then you go that direction and then you turn that direction, we all know we'll never get anywhere. At the end of a large amount of time, if we continue to do that, we will be right where we started. But we know that if we put one foot in front of the other by the grace of God and we continue doing that in the same direction, then you can get quite far, little by little. People have walked from Alaska, the northern tip of Alaska, down to the southern tips of South America.
People have walked vast distances because they put one foot in front of the other in the same direction with a specific goal. And over time, and it's often a surprisingly short amount of time, have reached those goals and gone great distances all on foot. That's a lot like our life day by day. What we get done in one year is simply the cumulative effect of what we do each day. We read 10 pages in a good book every day.
We will have read 3, 600 pages in a year. That's a lot. 10 pages doesn't sound like much, but 10 pages added up day after day after day after day adds up to thousands of pages. That's humbling to me to realize how much I could be reading at 10 pages a day that I've missed. But is what numbering our days means.
Prioritizing our work so that it is focused on the attainment of godly goals. Recognizing in those goals that it is in the Lord. The Lord is our dwelling place. That He's our strength to do these things. That He is the one who gives us the ability to do what we do.
He's the one who gives us the time to take those steps. Time is Time is important and it's limited. The passage of time each year, this season, when we are about to turn the calendar over, when we are about to take one off the wall and put another one on the wall. Do we still do that? Are they all electronic?
I think we do. When we do that, it's time to ask ourselves, what have I accomplished this year of lasting significance, of lasting importance? How have I used the time that I've been given? You know, if you are living, and I think all of you look to be out there living, I don't see anybody that's not. If you are living, God still has work for you here on this earth.
God still has work for you on this earth. If you are Born from above, if you are a child of the King and you are living here, and you are living when 2019 comes around, it is because God still has work for you in this earth. No matter what your age is, one, ten, or a hundred, or a hundred and ten, God still has work for you on this earth. He has put you here for a purpose. Maybe it is simply to live a life of prayer and fasting as Anna did, who was probably 104 or something of great age, the Bible says.
She probably wasn't able to do a lot more than that, but she did that. If you are living here now, it's because God has work for you to do. He's giving you time, He's giving me time to serve him. But what if you are not a child of God? Then it is, this time is even more important because God in His grace is waiting for you.
He is giving you an opportunity in this day to call upon Him, to turn to Him, to return to Him, to confess, to say in agreement with this text that yes, our sins are before the Lord, they are before his countenance, and that we are under his wrath and condemnation. And if you are living, my friend, if you are living, it is because it is God's day of grace and he is waiting he is waiting Not willing that any should perish but that all whom he is called and ordained should come to life in him And so if you are outside of Christ, it is especially vital to number your days, to prioritize your time, because now is a day of grace. What's important to us as we look back over the past year? What's important to us is not what we said was important. It's not what we say is number one.
People often say, well, what's the priorities of your life? Well, number one is God, number two is my wife, and three is my family, or something like that. And that's good, but the passage of the year is an opportunity to look back and see, is that really how you numbered your days? Is that how we prioritized our time? Is that in fact what we did?
See, what we did, the record of our use of time over the past year is what we really value and how we really numbered our days and prioritized our time. It's what we did. It's how we actually used our time. It's something I know we all can improve on. And it's something that we have to do daily.
Number our days is a daily activity and yearly as we reflect back, how did we use our time? We say that God is our first priority and our wife is our second or our spouse and our family, but is that how we in fact allocated our time? Is that what we actually did in the past year? Because what we did is the true priority of our heart. And so we can then pray to the Lord for wisdom to set the right goals.
For wisdom to set the right goals. James talks about those who talk about going to such and such a place to buy and sell, spend a year there to buy and sell and make a profit. Well, James says, you ought to say, if the Lord wills, We'll do this. Pray to the Lord for the wisdom to set the right goals. To number our days is to recognize that today is precious.
It's time that God has given us. It's valuable. It is forever lost. You can never go back and get that time back. Never.
If it is wasted, it is wasted forever. If you forget to do something, you can go back and do it again. You can go back and get it. But if you waste an hour, it's forever gone. And that's Moses' exhortation to us.
It's sobering exhortation. So teach us to number our days. It's not something that we innately do, it's something that we need to learn to do. Something that we need to practice and work at doing and give diligence to. So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts into wisdom.
If we don't do this, if we don't prioritize time, if we don't number the days that God has given us, then we can't apply our hearts to wisdom. That's why we need to do this. The second prayer request that Moses brings Is that God's anger may be turned away or satisfied? God's anger might be turned away and satisfied. Return O Lord how long And have compassion upon your servants.
Is this your prayer? Can you say with assurance, do you know with assurance that God's wrath has been turned away, that it has been appeased, that it has been satisfied? Does the Holy Spirit bear witness with your spirit that this is in fact true in your life. If it is then we don't need to be discouraged by the failures that come. Instead we can allow them to motivate us to do better, to do better the next day.
No, because to those who are in Christ, to those against whom God's wrath has been turned away, there is no more condemnation. Our failures and our sins and the wrath of God for them have been put upon Christ. And so This is Moses' third prayer request. Because God is the creator of time and we are but the creatures of it, because God has ordained the times and seasons of our life, because our days are very short and limited compared to eternity. Because we are under the wrath and judgment of God, Moses' third prayer request is that God would satisfy us early with his mercy so that we might praise Him for more days.
Our purpose, our purpose, the reason that we exist, the reason that we have the days that we have is so that we can glorify the Lord. And our desire ought And our desire ought to be that we spend more of our days fulfilling the purpose for which God has created us. Satisfy us early with your mercy. Yes, we can rejoice in those who late in life come to be satisfied with the mercy of the Lord, but how much more wonderful it is when the Lord satisfies us early with that mercy. And we are able to spend all of our life and dedicate all of our life to His service, to seeking to glorify Him, to seeking to accomplish the purpose for which he's created us to Seek and to pray and to work that his will would be done here on earth even as it is in heaven And if he has satisfied us early with his mercy Then our prayer is that he would preserve us in his mercy.
We do need to mark this passage of time and we need to treat every day, to look at every day as both a gift of God and a day that might be our last. A day that might be our last because it might be. None of us know the day in God's appointment book for the days of our life. None of us. And so it's very dangerous to think, well I am young and I have my life in front of me and I can start thinking about how to prioritize my time and how to glorify the Lord and accomplish it, I can think about that later.
Oh, satisfy us early with your mercy that we may praise you all the days of our life. Because we don't know the day of God's appointment. And We don't want to be like that rich man that Jesus called a fool. He called him a fool because he wasn't satisfied really with God's mercy. He thought that, well, I am great and wealthy and I'll just build bigger barns.
And God said, no, tonight your soul is required of you. Tonight. His life was cut short. So if you are young, if you are young, I urge you today to early seek the Lord, to early be satisfied with His mercy, and to early in your life begin to number your days, even yet in your parents' home. Begin to number your days that you may apply your heart into wisdom, because each day is precious and you don't know how long your life will be.
Self-prayer request is that God would be a God to us and to our children. That your work appear to your servants and your glory to their children. That's your work. That's your work of salvation. That's your work of creation.
That your works appear to your servants and your glory to their children. To the children of your servants. That's Moses' prayer, that as God is a God to us, that he would also be a God to our children. We can pray this because this is what God has promised. We can always pray to God for the things that God has promised to us.
God has promised that as He has God to us, He will be God to our children. We really have no right to pray for anything that God has not promised to give us. We have no right to pray and ask for something that God has not promised to give us. Now he has promised us a lot. He said, whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you.
He said, commit your way to the Lord and I will give you the desires of your heart. So as our way is committed to the Lord, as our life is dedicated to glorifying God, the Lord has promised to give us the desires of our heart. And so this idea that we have no right to pray for that which God has not promised is in no way limiting to the things that we can pray for because God has promised us every spiritual blessing in Jesus Christ. Everything that we have need of to accomplish and to do what He's called us to do, he's promised to give to us. But he has specifically promised to be God to our children.
And so we see here Moses praying, requesting of the Lord, let your work appear to your servants and your glory to their children. May our children see the glory of God and know that reality, know His glory, know His work, know the glory of his work in their own life. And lastly, Moses asked the Lord to establish the work of our hands. Because whatever we do without the Lord's blessing, we do in vain. It's vain to stay up late.
I need to tell that to myself every day I think. It's vain to stay up late because The Lord gives to his beloved sleep. And it's those who labor apart from his blessing, labor in vain. No matter what we're building, whether we're building a house or a family, those who labor without God's blessing, labor in vain. So Moses prays here that God would establish the work of our hands.
Pray to the Lord for wisdom to fulfill the goals that he has given us wisdom to set. Pray for the Lord for wisdom to fulfill the goals that he has given you the wisdom to set. Pray for the Lord's strength to be your strength. Because we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. And so let establish, pray that the Lord would establish the work of your hands.
Recognize that the work of our hands, the credit for the work of our hands belongs to the Lord. The credit for the work of our hands belongs to the Lord. So remember, part of numbering our days, that we may apply our hearts into wisdom, is to recognize that everything that we do, every goal that we accomplish, we have done. It's not I who live, but Christ lives in me. Things that we do, we do because of his strength, because of his power and ability.
And we need to recognize that. Part of numbering our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom, is to give the Lord the glory. And not to think when he has blessed us and established the work of our hands and given us great wealth, you know, own a house, that's great wealth, to think that we have gotten this by the work of our own hands. It's so tempting to think that. So look around and to think, oh, look at all that I have gotten.
Everything we have, God has given to us. If the work of our hands has been established, it is because God has done that for us. And to apply our hearts unto wisdom is to give Him the glory and the honor for all that he has done through us, as well as all that he has done in us. And so find people who will be an encouragement to you, who will hold you accountable for the things that you have set yourself to do. And who can encourage you every day in the Lord to continue to pursue the work that God has called you to.
So I hope that this little look at Psalm 90 is an encouragement to us here in the next days, especially but each day of this year, to number the days, to prioritize our time, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word that speaks to every area of our life. That there is nothing that we do that is outside of your sight. There is nothing that we do that is secular or outside of those things to which your word speaks.
Father, you are the Lord of every area of our life, and your Word speaks to us no matter what we do, even when we eat and drink. We belong to you. We are yours. And we yield to you today our hands and our feet. We yield and surrender to you our mind, our thoughts.
We surrender to you our strength. We surrender to you our wealth. Indeed, we surrender even our days, our time that we so highly prize. We surrender it to you. You are the Lord of it.
And all of these things you have given them to us, every one of them. And we acknowledge your Lordship over them. For you are the everlasting Father, from eternity to eternity. And there is nothing that we have that you have not given to us. You are the Father of lights.
You are the Father of blessing. Father, we ask that we might move and live in you, that you might be our dwelling place, And that you might use us for your glory in your kingdom. That the days of our lives might be spent not pursuing our own pleasures and our own desires, but that the days of our lives might be spent seeking wisdom, dwelling in your house, and faithfully carrying out all the labors to which you call us. Father, we cannot do this in our own strength and with our own ability. Oh Lord, we look to you.
We look to your spirit, for it is not by might nor by strength, but by your spirit. We ask that you would fill us with your spirit, that we might be led and instructed and taught by you. We ask all of these things through the precious and the strong name of our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
